Prodigal Son fans, it’s time to say goodbye to Malcom Bright (Tom Payne), Dr. Martin “The Surgeon” Whitly (Michael Sheen) and the rest of the crew — and we don’t just mean for the summer.
Ahead of the season 2 finale, Deadline reported that Fox is not renewing the crime drama for a third season. In other words, this week’s episode of Prodigal Son is the series finale. After news broke last week that the show was canceled, fans went off on Twitter.
“I’m so disappointed! This show is so good! I hate that it started on Fox. They always cancel shows that fans love. So infuriating ????,” one person wrote. “Bad decision Fox, you just canceled one of best shows on tv,” another added. “Noooo! I really enjoy #ProdigalSon – the cast is terrific and the writing is so clever. This is really sad and disappointing news,” a different fan said.
Others immediately began calling for Prodigal Son to move networks and continue on. “Save this show Netflix! We want Season 3!” a follower commented. “SOMEONE PICK IT UP PLEASE I BEG @hulu @hbomax @netflix,” someone else tweeted.
But why did Prodigal Son get canceled?
According to Deadline, Prodigal Son was “the lowest-rated” among Fox’s drama series lineup, which includes 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star and The Resident. While online streaming gave the psychological thriller a bump in its viewership, it still wasn’t enough for it to come back for a third installment.
Last spring, Prodigal Son was the last Fox drama to be renewed for its second season, perhaps an early sign that the show would soon be over. TVLine also shared insight from a network insider who reportedly said it was an “incredibly difficult” choice to make but the show’s “viewership was just too small to justify bringing it back for a third season.” The Hollywood Reporter echoed similar words, adding that Oscar-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones was brought into the cast to try to increase ratings.

Sad news aside, it sounds like lead actor Tom Payne is taking the end of this chapter in stride. He shared his thoughts with fans on Twitter and encouraged everyone to tune in for the finale.
“What a trip. Playing Malcolm has been a joy and a privilege,” he wrote. “The best cast on network TV and the most unique show around. We did it in style. Love to everyone who enjoyed it all along with us. And check out the last two eps! THEY ARE AMAZING. ???? #ProdigalSon.”
