Carrie Underwood is one busy bee. Between her career and being a mom to her two boys, Jacob and Isaiah, the Grammy-winning country artist has her hands full. But despite the American Idol winner‘s hectic schedule, she always has her husband, retired NHL star Mike Fisher, there for support.
The story goes that the two first met back in 2008 thanks to a blind date arranged by Carrie’s bassist, Mark Childers. At first, Carrie wasn’t really into the idea. After all, she was based in Nashville and he had an established hockey career in Ottawa, Canada. “I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let’s get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome,” she said in a 2012 VH-1 Behind the Music special.

Despite Carrie’s hesitancy though, she agreed to meet Mike at a backstage meet-and-greet event after one of her concerts, according to People. Apparently, it didn’t take long for the two to fall for each other. The magazine reports that Carrie thought the hockey pro was “hot, hot, hot” right off the bat. Lucky for Carrie, the feeling was mutual: “First time I saw her, she was more beautiful in person than on TV,” Mike reportedly gushed in Behind the Music.
With distance keeping them apart, they tried to stay in touch as much as possible via phone calls. Finally, they had a chance to see each other again about three months later — and the wait was more than worth it. On New Year’s Eve in 2008, the two shared their first kiss at midnight.
“That was good for us. Then our first real date was on New Year’s Eve, and our first kiss was when the ball dropped,” Carrie revealed to Glamour, according to Taste of Country.
It was truly the perfect moment. “We were in front of people, and he’s not a big PDA guy,” she recalled to the magazine. “I figured, I’ll go in for it because he can’t leave me hanging, right? So I made him kiss me in public.”

Not even a year after that magical night, Mike proposed to Carrie with a yellow diamond ring. Six months later, on July 10, 2010, the two tied the knot in front of 250 friends and family members in Georgia. Shortly after, they honeymooned together in Tahiti.
Alas, when they got married, the two were still forced to travel a lot for their respective careers. Thankfully though, in February 2011, Mike was picked up by the Nashville Predators, which allowed the couple to be together in one place.
“To be honest I was praying a few days before about [moving teams],” Mike told the Vancouver Sun, per People. “I was just so frustrated and said ‘God, if you have me go somewhere take care of it, look after it,’ and he sure did that. He put me in a place I was comfortable with, and I think that’s part of reason that this is the place I’m supposed to be and that’s comforting for sure.”
Despite both having to travel a lot for work, Carrie is more than okay with balancing each other’s careers and their marriage.
“Any guy I’ve ever dated, there would always be that doubt: ‘He didn’t answer his phone. What’s he doing? It’s late.’ I’m not the crazy-girlfriend type, but there was a little voice in the back of my head,” Carrie told Glamour. “I don’t have to worry about Mike. I don’t think twice. He’s going out? I don’t care; it doesn’t bother me. I don’t bat an eye.”
She later added that she thought it was good for them that Mike traveled a lot for work.
“We’re both independent people, so we can’t have somebody around 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Carrie said.
In February 2015, Carrie and Mike welcomed their first son, Isaiah, into the world. But before having her second child, Carrie revealed to CBS News that she had endured three miscarriages while working on her album Cry Pretty.
“So, at that point, it was just kind of like, ‘Okay, like, what’s the deal? What is all of this?'” she told the outlet. “And throughout the whole process, you know, I’m writing and, like, literally right after finding out that I would lose a baby, I’d have a writing session, I’d be like, ‘Let’s go. You know, I can’t just sit around thinking about this. Like, I wanna work, I wanna do this.'”
Carrie gave birth to her second son, Jacob, in January of 2019. After her son was born, she wrote on Instagram, “Our hearts are full, our eyes are tired and our lives are forever changed. Life is good.”

Looking back on all of their ups and downs, Carrie made it clear to People that she is grateful to have such a loving partner by her side.
“He is so levelheaded about everything, and when I was dealing with everything, not just emotionally but hormonally, when you’re going on that roller coaster of pregnant, not pregnant, pregnant, not pregnant, I was probably not very easy to love, to be honest,” she said. “And to have somebody so even-keeled, he was my lifeline, keeping me grounded.”
