Originally, the special was supposed to be filmed over two days in late March 2020 and air on HBO Max in May for the streaming service’s debut. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the project was temporarily put on hold. Then in November 2020, Matthew Perry shared an important update on Twitter with fans: “Friends reunion being rescheduled for the beginning of March [2021]. Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that’s the way I like it!” he tweeted.

Alas, this didn’t come to fruition. That said, both Deadline and David Schwimmer later confirmed that filming for Friends: The Reunion was set to start in April.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc are all returning to film the special on the show’s original set at Warner Bros. Studio’s Stage 24 in Burbank, California.
“The cast and producers are all very excited to go into production, as this will be the first time since the show ended that the whole cast will be together and on the original sets to reminisce,” HBO Max said in a statement in April 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Series creators David Crane, Marta Kauffman, and Kevin Bright will all direct Friends: The Reunion alongside The Late Late Show with James Corden writer Ben Winston. In addition, the Friends stars and directors will be executive producers.
What is Friends: The Reunion about?
Friends: The Reunion will be an unscripted hour-long event where the cast will revisit the original set and go down memory lane together. Fans can also expect to see “rare behind-the-scenes footage” during the event.
HBO Max emphasized that the special isn’t a new addition to the original 236 episodes.
“In order to avoid any misunderstanding about what this special is, we want to make it very clear that this is not a new, original episode of the series,” HBO Max said. “The cast will be appearing as themselves, not as their beloved characters.”
What’s more, David teased on The Graham Norton Show that there’s a fun surprise in store.
“There’s nothing scripted. We’re not in character. We’re all ourselves, the real people,” he said on the BBC show. “Although there is one section of it that I don’t want to give away, but we all read something.”
What’s more, Friends: The Reunion will have more than a dozen A-listers and former guest stars and cast members appear, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, and Reese Witherspoon. Activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai is also set to make an appearance.
