After the much-anticipated reunion of “Japril” in last week’s Grey’s Anatomy episode, fans are now bracing themselves for the dreaded character exit of Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams).
While many were elated to see Jackson and April Kepner (Sarah Drew) on screen again after years apart, the sweet moment came with a shocking twist as Jackson began to discuss a future away from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. With April’s support, Jackson shared his plans to start a new chapter on the East Coast. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little bit to see what happens when he breaks the news to his Grey Sloan coworkers because this week there will not be a new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC.

But not to worry. The hit ABC medical drama will be back next week on Thursday, May 20. Grey’s Anatomy will return with its 15th episode of season 17 entitled “Tradition.” The upcoming episode will mark the last episode for Jesse’s character, according to Deadline. The actor announced his departure from the show after 12 years, sharing that he will “forever be grateful for the boundless opportunities” the show has created.
“You’re going to Boston?” Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) asks in the 30-second clip above. “I am … my official resignation,” Jackson tells her in reply.
Leading up to the heartbreaking goodbye, ABC has decided to air reruns of two fan-favorite episodes this week: Season 2, episode 16 “It’s the End of the World” followed by Season 2, episode 17 “As We Know It.” Starting at 8 p.m. ET on May 13, fans can watch the Grey’s Anatomy Throwback Thursday special.
Since we won’t ever say no to Grey’s, you know where we’ll be. Sitting beside us will be a box of tissues as we continue to process the fact that Jackson probably won’t be on the show ever again.
